Farmer's pot with minced meat, potatoes and peppers

They really do exist:the perfect recipes that everyone likes and enjoys cooking. It's the same with the farmer's pot. The recipe for the farmer's pot has been on the blog for 8 years, becauseit's one of the first I ever published.Since then, I have revised the post several times and many readers have found my way to the recipe, which can be found at the top of Google.

But not only that, the farmer's pot is also the cover image of my book“4-week after-work kitchen“. My first book that specializes in simple and very tasty dishes to cook quickly.

Maybe you already know the recipe because it is a well-known dish that we used to cook with Maggi at home. I have now learned to cook delicious recipes without the bagged meals - without more effort, but with much more taste. Be sure to try cooking the simple farmer's pot yourself.

Cooking a farmer's pot with minced meat and potatoes - it's that easy

3 fresh ingredients for your shopping list

  1. potatoes– I always use waxy potatoes, peel them briefly and cut them into cubes
  2. Paprika– Red, yellow and orange peppers taste best. You can also mix the varieties.
  3. minced meat– I prefer to cook the farmer's pot with organic minced beef, it is a little leaner than minced pork

All the other ingredients you need to cook the farmer's pot will probably be on the pantry shelf.

  • Tomato paste– adds color and flavor to the stew
  • Garlic & Onions– finely chopped, they are the basis for almost every dish. I use them fresh and finely chopped.
  • broth– Beef or vegetable broth, even stock works well with it and brings a lot of flavor.
  • Spices: Thymian,Sweet paprika,Hot pepper, smoked paprika*and some salt and pepper are enough to season

One tip: use one in addition to the classic paprika spicessmoked variety*, that tastes really good. The smoked aroma goes perfectly with the farmer's pot, just make sure to use it sparingly. The taste is very intense.

What else goes with it?

I have collected what has been commented on and adapted by readers over the many years. There are some great ideas for “pimping”!

  • More
  • Zucchini
  • Peppers
  • sweet potato
  • carrots
  • Mushrooms
  • Feta (add on top shortly before the end of the cooking time)
  • Green beans

Farm pot preparation – it’s that easy

  1. Wash vegetables and cut into bite-sized cubes, dice onion.
  2. Fry the minced meat, tomato paste and onions and add the vegetables and spices.
  3. Deglaze with broth and red wine and simmer for about 20 minutes.
  4. Thicken a little if necessary, DONE!

Thicken the farmer's pot at the end

If the farmer's pot is too runny for you after cooking, you can set it yourself. There are different possibilities

  • You can use the classic sauce thickener or, as I like to do it, dissolve 1 tablespoon of starch in a little COLD water and stir it in while cooking.
  • After frying, make a roux and deglaze with red wine and stock.
  • Use a mashed potato because the starch in the potato also binds.

Farmer's pot as a family dish - cooking for children

The farmer's pot is a very popular family dish - no wonder, it's a super simple meal and kids love it too! The stew is reminiscent of a Bolognese but with potatoes.

But while I have always cooked the farmer's pot with red wine in the past, my boys now eat with me - so I save the alcohol.

ButHow do you cook the farmer's pot without alcohol?l and doesn't compromise on taste?

  • Red grape juice can be used instead of red wine.
  • A sip of balsamic vinegar can be used as a supplement or instead of grape juice.

This is how I always cook the farmer's pot now and it tastes just as fantastic. But just a little different. The

Farmer's pot for meal prep

The only thing that is always not so easy to do with potato dishes is to cook them in large quantities in advance and then freeze them, as potatoes change their taste and consistency somewhat after thawing.

But that's not a bad thing, because we ate the farmer's pot very well and very tasty for 2-3 days and we are really all fans of it. You can transfer the stew into storage containers immediately after cooking, let it cool and store it for the next 3 days.

Cook hearty minced meat stew vegetarian

Even if the minced meat is a main ingredient, the farmer's pot can easily be modified to make it vegetarian:

  • Use a type of vegetarian minced meat – there are plenty to choose from in the supermarket
  • You can also use (brown) lentils instead of minced meat.

Do you have any other ideas? Then feel free to comment in the comments – I’m always happy to hear your input!

Is the recipe enough for many portions?

Probably the most frequently asked question is about portion size. As you know, I'm a bit hesitant because everyone has different eating habits and therefore different sized portions.

The amount is enough for 2-3 large portions. A family of 4 will probably be fed up with it (depending on the age of the children ;-))

notes

Tipp:

  • If you like it a little spicier, you can also add a little chili to the farmer's pot.
  • Instead of wine, you can also use a splash of red wine vinegar. But be careful with the amount and add sparingly.
  • You can use dark sauce thickener if you prefer the stew to be a little less runny. Alternatively, you can mix some starch in a little COLD water and add it.
